The Lousios and the Birth of Zeus
According to Arcadian tradition, Rhea gave birth to Zeus on Mount Lykaion — or near present-day Dimitsana, depending on which version you follow. Immediately after the birth, the nymphs Neda, Theisoa, and Hagno received the newborn in their arms and bathed him in the waters of this river.
Kronos was not supposed to find out. Zeus was hidden. And the water that cleansed him remained ice-cold forever — as though it held something of that moment.
Today, the Lousios gorge plunges 300 metres below its rim. Byzantine monasteries cling to its walls — the Palaia Moni Philosophou, built in the 10th century into a crack in the rock, appears to float above the river. The path connecting it to the Nea Moni and the ancient city of Gortyna is Section 1 of the Menalon Trail.
Heracles and the Boar of Erymanthos
Zeus was not the only god to leave his mark on these mountains.
Heracles' fourth labour brought him to Erymanthos, the mountain that today divides the prefectures of Achaia and Elis. Eurystheus had tasked him with capturing alive the enormous boar that was ravaging the region. Heracles tracked the animal through the snow along the ridge — the same pass that the Hercules Trail follows today.
Nobody knows whether the boar was real. But the landscape is unquestionably here: steep, wild, with Erymanthos reaching 2,224 metres and winter lasting long.
Cape Tainaron and the Entrance to the Underworld
At the southernmost tip of the Mani, where the land ends at Cape Tainaron, ancient belief held that one of the entrances to Hades lay here.
Heracles used this entrance for his twelfth and final labour: to bring Cerberus — the three-headed guardian of the underworld — back to the surface alive. The cave still exists at the tip of the peninsula. The Mani Trail — Tainaron reaches it, following the western coast of Outer Mani.
You stand at the edge, look south across the sea, and there is no more land. Only Mediterranean, all the way to Africa.
